Teaching a Class This Spring

Starting in the spring, I’ll be teaching a writing workshop with the wonderful organization Springfed Arts.  If you live in the Detroit area and you’d like to take a class with me, this is your chance.  Dates and registration info are below.

Young Adult Fiction with J. Gabriel Gates: Jane Addams School, 2222 W. Webster Road, Royal Oak, Wednesdays, February 6, 13, 20, 27, March 6 & 13, 7 pm – 9 pm.  Writers of all levels are welcome to attend and explore the myriad genres and styles in the exploding area of YA / teen fiction.  Workshop your existing YA manuscript or work-in-progress, or gain the tools and insight necessary to make your first foray into this field of writing a success.  A Michigan native and Hollywood screenwriter, J. Gabriel Gates has had four novels published by HCI Books (publishers of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series) including teen horror novel The Sleepwalkers and teen urban fantasy / paranormal romance series The Tracks. (Dark Territory, Ghost Crown, and the forthcoming Shadow Train.)  His most recent title is the acclaimed dystopian sci-fi thriller Blood Zero Sky.  www.jgabrielgates.com  REGISTER HERE

I’ll likely be open to taking on new mentorship clients in the new year, too, so if that’s something you’re interested in, then e-mail me through my website www.jgabrielgates.com.

I’ve now wrapped up my 2012 book tour, but Blood Zero Sky is still in stores in the “New in Sci Fi” section.  Please remember it as you’re picking out gifts for the readers in your life!

I’ve also been spending my time revising The Tracks Book 3, which is scheduled for release in 2013, plus writing a NEW book.  Stay tuned for details…

Thanks as always for following my career.  Here’s wishing you a happy holidays, a merry Christmas, and a joyous new years!

Mentorship Program with J. Gabriel Gates

One-On-One Mentorship Program

At my book signings, I often run into aspiring authors who have questions about writing process, how to get published, and the experience of writing in general. For a while now, I’ve been thinking about the best way to help writers get the knowledge they need. Writing conventions can cost hundreds of dollars and you generally get very little one-on-one time with authors to get your questions answered. College MFA programs can cost tens of thousands of dollars and often, the instructors have never even had a book published with a major publisher! So I asked myself: how can I provide a solution for people? The result is my new one-on-one mentorship program.

The way it works is simple: for a reasonable investment, you get one-on-one hourly sessions with me via skype (or in person, if you live near Detroit.) You can use the time however you like; I can answer questions about writing process or the publishing business, I can read your work and provide feedback, or you can pick my brain about my work. There are lots of things I’ve achieved that might hold great lessons for the aspiring writer:

– 4 critically-acclaimed novels published by a major publisher (HCI Books, of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series)
– 2 screenplays optioned by Hollywood producers
– Secured a highly-respected New York literary agent
– Built social media / internet following
– Created a highly-successful model for book tours / author appearances

In short, if you want to learn how to write amazing books, get an agent, get your books published, and then sell them to the public, I have information you might want to know. Or maybe you’re just a fan who wants to learn more about how I work; that’s cool, too!

COST

Each session lasts for 1 hour. This might be spent in a skype session, or, if you prefer, you can use it to have me read some of your work (off skype) and then give you feedback on it. The more sessions you purchase, the less they cost.

1 session = $50

5 sessions = $235 ($47 each)

10 sessions = $450 ($45 each)

20 sessions = $800 ($40 each)

MENTORSHIP CERTIFICATE

If you do 20 sessions with me, I’ll send you a free “mentorship” certificate. Completing a mentorship program with a respected author will give you a valuable line to add to your resume, query letter, or MFA program application. Plus, if you spend 20 hours with me, you’ll get an incredible amount of knowledge – probably everything I know!

Imagine if you could have one-on-one time with your favorite literary great – Hemingway, Tolkien, Hesse, or King. Well, you can’t. The first three are dead, and Stephen King is way too busy. I, however, am still alive – and although I am busy, I’m not to busy for you. So what do you say? Let’s sit down together and make you the author you’ve dreamed of becoming.

To get started, simply pay for your desired number of sessions above, then contact me through the “Contact” link on my website to schedule your session.

In other news, I’ve been busting my tail promoting my newest book Blood Zero Sky! Reviews have been crazy-good, and if you haven’t checked them out yet, you should. The book is available online and in the “New in Sci-Fi” section of your local book store.

Book Reviews

Hello, mighty readers! I’ve decided it would be cool if I used my blog for something that might be of use to you besides bragging about my own awesome books. Therefore, I will now be posting book reviews here from time to time. Sure, I don’t have fancy graphics with winking smiley faces or glittering hearts instead of stars like many book blogs have – hell, I don’t even have stars, I just write the word: “stars.” Frankly, I don’t have time for that crap. Do you think Hemingway would have had winking smiley faces? Nope. I’m trying to do some serious writing here, people! But just to be nice, I’ll post some reviews, too. Hope you enjoy.

Book Reviews

Breed by Chase Novak

I was lucky enough to get my hands on an advance copy of this book before it even came out, and I have to say, it was pretty bad-ass. The writing was excellent and there were plenty of moments to make your hackles rise and your stomach turn. My only criticism is that I could have felt a bit more emotionally invested in the characters; they felt a bit flat at times. But if you dig horror, put this book on your must-read list. It’s a quick and dirty read that’s well-crafted and worth your time.
Four Stars

I Robot by Isaac Asimov

As part of my ongoing mission to read and re-read some classic sci-fi in celebration of the release of my own sci-fi book “Blood Zero Sky,” I decided to check out “I Robot.” The Will Smith action flick I expected to find was not present. Asimov’s tale is more like a series of logic problems involving the now-legendary 3 laws of robotics and how they apply to human-robot interaction. Its told as a series of loosely strung together vignettes, tracing the inception of robot-kind through to its zenith. Because the tale involves many different characters, it affects the reader on a purely intellectual level rather than an emotional or visceral one, but given the ever-increasing role of computers in our lives, its worth a read, and will leave you with plenty to mull over.
Three Stars

The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury

This is not a “War of the Worlds” style story of a battle between humans and little green men that the title suggests. It was way cooler than that. More than anything, it was like a grand, dreamy poem, an anthropological exploration of a fictional, lost Martian society which, at every turn, holds a mirror up to the human society that comes in contact with it. It is told as a series of vignettes connected by nothing but their chronological order. As a result, characters appear in only one story and the reader doesn’t get much chance to connect with them emotionally. But what this story lacks in emotional connection, it more than makes up for with its exquisitely crafted language, its sometimes unnerving creepiness, and its haunting reflections on what it is to be human. Highly recommended.
